CHAPTER 27

EMERSYN

Liam’s abrupt departure two days prior had left a sour taste in my mouth. He promised he couldn’t do anything else about it right now, but he would be back. Then he was gone.

Secrets with secrets. He was a spy for the Royals? Or on the Royals? Definitely on the Royals. It made my head hurt. More, it made my heart hurt, but I couldn’t linger on that thought with so much going on around us. Jasper kept vanishing. He would show up long enough to give me a kiss and check on me, then he was gone again.

Vaughn was here, and that helped. In fact, he was almost always around the clubhouse and he’d begun doing sketches for possible tattoos for my arms. But something was off with him. Only when I asked, he just said it was fine. I needed to press more, but I’d spent every hour I could of the last couple of days with Lainey.

The time for her to go home closed in like some existential threat. I wasn’t the only one who dreaded it. The tension between her and Milo had been so high that she’d pretty much just moved into my room the night before last.

At her request, I made sure Milo was gone before we slipped into his room so she could collect some of her things.

“I know I said I didn’t want the dirty details,” I told her. “But you can talk to me.”

She glanced over her shoulder as she folded a top. “There’s nothing to say, not really. He doesn’t want me to go. I have to go. End of story.”

I frowned, propping my chin on my fist as I watched her from the back of the sofa. “I told him about Andrea.”

“I know.” She cast me another smile before walking over to the dresser. There were more clothes in the drawer. “But he wants more details than I’m willing to give him.”

Yeah. “They do that.” I sighed then because this was important. “How are you feeling?”

With her back to me, Lainey went still, the shirt she held was much too large for her. I had a feeling it was Milo’s, but I didn’t say anything.

“Between you and me?” she asked as she turned to face me.

“That goes without saying, but if you need to hear it—then I’ll take it to my grave.”

“Well, let’s not get that melodramatic,” she scolded with wide eyes, but neither of us laughed. Settling back against the dresser, she looked down at the shirt. “And I don’t know how I feel, Em. The last few weeks have been—a rollercoaster. I was worried about you, terrified, then here I’ve gone from terrified to furious to—he drives me crazy. Your brother isn’t like anyone I’ve ever met. He’s stubborn, fierce, brutally honest at times, and a fucking mystery at others.”

Tears flashed in her eyes, but she turned away to fold the shirt and shook her head.

“I have to go home. I should have left a week ago.
